Probably the biggest threat to the continued existence of bison these days is the extreme winter weather. The volume and independence of snowmobile traffic in Yellowstone is a lot more controlled than in the earlier days, which has the dual benefit of reducing pollution and helping the wildlife, but the brutal winters persist. On this day the temperature, with wind chill, was a bone-numbing minus 75F (minus 59C).
