Pola Island, Vatia Bay

National Park of American Samoa, USA

One of the less accessible places in the National Park System and, not surprisingly, one of the least visited, the National Park of American Samoa isn't for the casual visitor.  Once there, however, the Park provides some amazing scenery and unusual birdlife.  The sea stack of Pola Island acts as the nesting ground for a vast quantity of tropical seabirds such as the Magnificent Frigatebird, White-Tailed Tropicbird and Blue-Footed Booby, among others.  The tranlucence of the waves is what I will always remember, however.  The colour lent a unique characteristic to the fierce crashing sounds of the surf as it battered the shoreline, and me.
